Network Visualization with the VINT Network Animator Nam

چکیده
Protocol design requires understanding state distributed across many nodes, complex message exchanges, and with competing traÆc. Traditional analysis tools (such as packet traces) too often hide protocol dynamics in a mass of extraneous detail. This paper presents nam , a network animator that provides packet-level animation and protocol-speci c graphs to aid the design and debugging of new network protocols. Taking data from network simulators (such as ns) or live networks, nam was one of the rst tools to provide general purpose, packet-level, network animation. Nam now integrates traditional time-event plots of protocol actions and scenario editing capabilities. We describe how nam visualizes protocol and network dynamics.

No single network design meets the global needs of all organizations and institutes. Also, it is impossible to engineer a universal network from a single network technology. Because of such diverse network technologies, it is often necessary to analyze, design/model, simulate, test and measure protocols and their interconnections for designing heterogeneous networks and project growth in variou...

The Network Simulator 2 (NS-2) is a popular and powerful simulation environment, and the number of NS-2 users has increased greatly in recent years. Although it was originally designed for wired networks, NS-2 has been extended to work with wireless networks, including wireless LANs, mobile ad hoc networks, and sensor networks. The Network Animator (NAM) for NS-2 has not been extended for wirel...
